Carter describes how he and Goddard Lieberson after World War II played some of Ives' work for Stokowski, in an unsuccessful attempt to persuade him to perform it. Carter also mentions one Stokowski performance of Carter's composition Eight Etudes and a Fantasy and gives his opinion of a later Stokowski performance of Ives' Symphony No. 4.
